Valentine’s Day is in two days, and some of you already have your restaurant picked out and your card written, I hope that amidst all the hubbub you’ll remember this: Valentine’s Day is a wonderful day to celebrate your love for the special people in your life, but that doesn’t mean it’s the only day you should spend doing that.
I’m going to steal an idea from my wonderful friend The Dating Doctor, David Coleman: if you really want to wow someone, treat them like it’s Valentine’s Day tomorrow, the day before the holiday. Send flowers to their office or plan a special meal—demonstrate that you’re not just being extra loving because of a date on a calendar.
Of course, that doesn’t give you permission to drop the ball on V-Day, either—make sure to have surprises ready then, too. I have yet to hear a woman complain of too many flowers or kind gestures, so go ahead and go a little overboard. For instance, sprinkle the walkway with Hershey’s Kisses, and tell her that you’ve “already kissed the ground she walks on.” Another tip: got to the florist and get roses that have already blossomed, and use the petals from those “discount” roses to sprinkle around the house or on the table for a romantic meal. Finally, don’t buy her lingerie–we both know that’s not really a gift for her.
And ladies, though I think this is a day for your man to treat you, a little reciprocation never hurt anyone. Leave little notes in places you’ll know he’ll find them throughout the day, offer to cook a romantic meal, or plan a surprise outing–it doesn’t take much to show him that you care.
Give it a try, and comment below to tell me how it goes!
